(Zechariah 1:1–6, NLT) “In November of the second year of King Darius’s reign, the Lord gave this message to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah and grandson of Iddo: “I, the Lord, was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore, say to the people, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.’ Don’t be like your ancestors who would not listen or pay attention when the earlier prophets said to them, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Turn from your evil ways, and stop all your evil practices.’ “Where are your ancestors now? They and the prophets are long dead. But everything I said through my servants the prophets happened to your ancestors, just as I said. As a result, they repented and said, ‘We have received what we deserved from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. He has done what he said he would do.”
(Matthew 23:35, NLT) “As a result, you will be held responsible for the murder of all godly people of all time—from the murder of righteous Abel to the murder of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed in the Temple between the sanctuary and the altar.”
ZECHARIAH – “Whom the Lord remembers.”
BEREKIAH – “The Lord blesses.”
IDDO – “At the appointed time.”
1. THE KEY TO BLESSING IS REPENTANCE.
(Romans 2:4, NLT) “Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”
(Matthew 3:8, NASB) “Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;”
(Matthew 3:2, NASB) “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Understanding the Kingdom
- Creation
- Powers of hell
- The Kingdom of God present now.
A. Repentance is turning from my sin to God.
(Zechariah 1:3, NLT) “Therefore, say to the people, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
B. Repentance is about my heart.
(Psalm 51:3–4, NLT) “For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.”
C. My repentance will always be imperfect.
(Matthew 6:12, NLT) “May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven… forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.”
2. GOD’S WORD WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL.
(Zechariah 1:6, NLT) “But everything I said through my servants the prophets happened to your ancestors, just as I said. As a result, they repented and said, ‘We have received what we deserved from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. He has done what he said he would do.”
GROWTHWORK
(Psalm 122:1, 6 NLT) “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord. … Pray for peace in Jerusalem. May all who love this city prosper.”
