(John 19:28–30, NLT) Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

(1 Peter 3:18, NLT) Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God.

What would your last words be? (Think about this.)

· “Look at Jesus.” N. T. Wright

· “Do the hard thing.” John Stott

Religion says, “Finish the work.”

The Good News says, “Receive the finished work.”

Jesus has done it all!

(Hebrews 5:9, NLT)In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.

(Philippians 3:9, NLT)I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

1. The Suffering was Finished.

(Psalm 88:15, NIV)From my youth I have suffered and been close to death.

2. The Prophecies of Scripture were Finished.

(Luke 18:31, NLT)Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus said, “Listen, we’re going up to Jerusalem, where all the predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will come true.

(Luke 24:44–47, NLT) Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.”

3. Our Redemption from Sin was Finished.

(1 Corinthians 1:30, NASB)But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,

(1 Corinthians 1:30, GW) You are partners with Christ Jesus because of God. Jesus has become our wisdom sent from God, our approval, our holiness, and our ransom from sin.

(Colossians 1:14, LB) “[Jesus] bought our freedom with his blood and forgave us all our sins.

4. The Plan for our Salvation was Finished.

(John 4:34, NLT)Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.

5. Satan’s Power was Finished.

(John 12:31, NLT)The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.

(Hebrews 2:14, NLT) Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.

(Colossians 1:13–14, NLT)For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.
