1.    A name is a fundamental part of a person’s identity

·      It represents family history, culture and personal story

·      It is the first way they are introduced to the world

·      It shapes how they are perceived and interact with others

(Philippians 2:9-11, NIV) “Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him THE name that is above every name, that at his name every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, that every tongue acknowledges that Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of the Father.”

(Matthew 1:21, NIV) “She will give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus (Yeshua) because he will save his people from their sins”

2.    The naming of Jesus defines the relationship God desires

(Isaiah 9:6, NIV) “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulders and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, the Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace”

3.   Praying in the name of Jesus

(John 14:13-14, NIV) “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  You may ask anything in my name and I will do it.”

a.   Praying in Jesus name reminds us of his sacrifice

(Isaiah 53:5, KJV) “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:  the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

(Isaiah 53:5, CEV) “He was pierced because of our rebellions and crushed because of our crimes.  He bore the punishment that made us whole: by his wounds we are healed.”

·      Demonstrated unconditional love

·      Provided the ransom

·      Established a new covenant

b.  Praying in Jesus name acknowledges Jesus’ authority

(Matthew 28:18, NIV) “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

c.   Praying in Jesus name aligns my will with His

(Galatians 5:25, NIV) “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

4.   The authority of his name demands obedience

(Matthew 28:18-20, NIV) “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me, therefore; Go and make disciples of all nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teach them to OBEY everything I have commanded you and surely I am with you always, to the very and of the age.”
